Kamran Akmal, a
Pakistani wicket-keeper, was born on January 13, 1982 in Lahore. He has two
brothers Adnan and Umar, who are also professional cricketers. Though Kamran
Akmal started his international career as a wicket-keeper, he has now
blossomed into a keeper-batsman.
Kamran Akmal made his international Test debut for Pakistan on November 9, 2002 in a match against Zimbabwe at Harare, where he scored 38 runs coming in as a replacement for Rashid Latif, the former wicketkeeper-batsman, who had suffered a back injury. His initial opportunities were fewer, and he mostly played as a replacement for either Rashid Latif or Moin Khan, both former wicket-keepers. But owing to his consistent performances he soon succeeded them as Pakistan’s regular wicket-keeper.
In 2005, Kamran Akmal performed well with his bat, scoring two centuries in
Test matches. His first century was a vital 109 scored coming in at number
eight and helped Pakistan draw the match against India at Mohali. His
match-winning knock in the second Test helped Pakistan clinch a series win
against England at Lahore. In 2006, Kamran Akmal scored two hundreds against
India, of which the first one was the quickest hundred by a wicket-keeper at
Lahore. The second hundred scored by him was on a green pacy wicket and
helped Pakistan get back from 39 for 6 to a thumping win. This aggressive
middle-order batsman and wicket- keeper has scored 1944 runs, including five
centuries and eight fifties and has 123 catches and 19 stumpings to his
credit in 38 Tests.
Kamran Akmal played his first One Day International (ODI) against Zimbabwe at
Bulawayo, on November 23, 2002. Coming in as an opener, he has scored two
back-to-back hundreds against England. Till date, he has played 88 ODI
matches and scored 1621 runs, which includes two half-centuries and four
hundreds, at an average of 25.32. As a wicket-keeper, he has 67 catches and
11 stumpings against his name in ODIs
Kamran Akmal played his first International Twenty20 (I20T) match against
England in Bristol on August 28, 2006. He started his domestic career playing
First-class matches and made both his First class and List-A debut during the
1997-98 season.
Kamran Akmal began his stint at the Indian Premier League (IPL) representing
the Rajasthan Royals in the inaugural season. He played six matches in the
tournament as a top-order batsman and wicket-keeper and made 128 runs,
including an unbeaten half-century against Chennai Super Kings. He also took
five catches and effected four stumpings in the tournament and helped his
team emerge as the 2008 IPL Champions.
